You actually have two IP addresses to keep track of: the public address the rest of the internet sees, and the private address your device has on your home network. They are found in different places.
Your public address: the quickest way
Open the homepage. It shows your public IPv4 address and, if your connection has one, your IPv6 address — read directly from the connection, together with your provider and network. This is the address websites, game servers and mail servers see.
From a terminal:
curl https://ipaddress.se/api/v1/my-ip?format=text
Your private address
The private address is only visible inside your own network. It often starts with 192.168., 10. or 172.16–31..
Windows 11: Settings → Network & internet → Wi-Fi (or Ethernet) → select the connection and look for IPv4 address. Faster: open Terminal and type ipconfig.
macOS: System Settings → Network → select the connection → Details → TCP/IP. In Terminal: ipconfig getifaddr en0.
iPhone: Settings → Wi-Fi → tap ⓘ next to the network. The private address is under IPv4 Address.
Android: Settings → Network & internet → Wi-Fi → tap the network → Advanced (menus differ slightly between manufacturers).
Your router’s addresses
Your router has two addresses: a private one facing your home network (often 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1) and a WAN address facing the internet. You’ll find the WAN address on the router’s status page.
Compare the WAN address with the public address on the homepage:
- Same address — your router has its own public IPv4 address.
- Different, and the WAN address starts with
100.64–100.127or is private — your provider uses CGNAT and you share the public address with other customers.
Why the address can change
Most home and mobile subscriptions have a dynamic address that can change when the router restarts. See Why does my IP address change?
